One of the most significant landmarks in recent European history is the NEWBORN monument in Kosovo. Unveiled in the capital city of Pristina at the moment of Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia, this monument symbolizes the country’s new beginning.
While Pristina may not be known for its traditional architectural beauty, it serves as a dynamic hub for international organizations such as the UN, EU, and NATO, as well as the government, media, and a thriving student population. The NEWBORN monument captures the essence of this ‘new Kosovo’.
Initially, the monument’s letters were painted yellow, and it became a popular tradition for visitors to write their names on them. On the fifth anniversary of independence, the letters were repainted in the colors of the flags of countries that recognized Kosovo. Since then, the monument’s colors change annually to reflect various themes.
The NEWBORN monument gained international recognition when Rita Ora featured it in her music video for “Shine Ya Light,” in which she proudly wore the Kosovar flag.
After visiting the NEWBORN monument, a short walk will lead you to the Bill Clinton statue, commemorating the former U.S. President’s pivotal role in Kosovo’s journey to independence.
